Barcode Scanner Range: Most scanners have around a 6' cable, if you need slightly more range you can use a USB extension cable. If you want the freedom to go 20 ft. or more away from the computer then a Bluetooth barcode scanner would be highly recommended rather then extending the cable.
Low Volume Retail
For smaller retailers, libraries, or office document tracking, these barcode decoders are a good fit. While not as aggressive or capable as higher end scanners, these are more affordable and ideal for lower volume scanning. Some even come with an auto sense stand, giving you the option of hands-free scanning if you so desire. The contact scanners require you to have them touch the barcode to get a good read, and in the case of wand scanners, you actually have to drag the scanner across the barcode.
High Volume Retail
Built with maximum performance in mind, a high volume retail scanner is a smart choice for big box retailers, light manufacturing, high volume shipping, or any place you may scan hundreds of barcodes or more a day. These are the barcode scanners you see in most retail operations. From single register boutiques to larger department stores, high volume scanners are a mainstay at any check stand. They offer a great combination of price and performance, with increased durability as well. These barcode scanners can survive drops off counters and collisions that could damage their low-volume counterparts.
2D Scanners
For more advanced scanning, a 2D scanner is a great choice. These scanners can read omnidirectionally, eliminating the need to reorient the barcode prior to scanning. Advanced optics in some models can perform OCR or even capture images, great for proof of payment for checks. For credit card or customer loyalty applications, or healthcare admitting, select barcode scanners can be modified to parse driver's license barcode data and send it in a specific order.
Cordless 1D Scanners
Cordless scanners give you greater freedom of motion than their cabled counterparts, making these scanners great for performing inventory checks or as a secondary grocery scanner. Most models are available with Bluetooth communications, meaning you can pair them with laptops, iPhones, or any Bluetooth-equipped host device. This gives you greater mobility for job duties, allowing you to go to the product as opposed to bringing it to the workstation. Select models also use alternative radios, giving you greater security and minimizing data loss risks.
Cordless 2D Scanners
These scanners give you freedom of motion and fantastic 2D scanning, great for large scale shipping, attendance, customer loyalty, and more. With optional driver's license parsing, these scanners become a great way to perform mobile admitting in hospitals or other error-free customer data capture applications. Available with Bluetooth or other wireless radios, there is a cordless 2D scanner right for you.
