FAQ# 2275: Are there any wireless scanners that use something other than Bluetooth for communication?

Question

Are there any wireless scanners that use something other than Bluetooth for communication?

Answer

Yes. While Bluetooth is going to be the most common method for communication between a wireless scanner and it's paired device, there are some alternative options. POS-X has a scanner that communicated using a ZigBee wireless radio to communicate with a USB dongle: The ION Linear Wireless. An alternative option would be the Unitech MS840P wireless scanner. This scanner also uses a specific radio frequency to communicate with the included USB dongle. The Unitech, however, is a laser scanner and is slightly more limited in it's functionality when compared to the POS-X ION.
