FAQ# 2411: What is the difference in a Workstation and an Application license?
Question
What is the difference in a Workstation and an Application license?
Answer
Workstation License
Supports unlimited printers per license but only supports a single user from a single PC or BarTender installation. Available printers can be connected to a local computer or anywhere on a LAN or WAN network. Workstation Licenses can either be purchased as a perpetual license (buy once and own forever), as a yearly subscription, or on a month-to-month basis.
Available on: BarTender Starter and Professional
Application License
Can support unlimited users but comes with a specific number of supported printers, depending on the license you select (typically 2, 5, or 10 printers). Some Application Licenses come with unlimited printer support. Available printers can be connected to a local computer or anywhere on a LAN or WAN network. Application licenses can be purchased as a perpetual license, an annual license, or a month-to-month basis. You can increase the number of printers on your license anytime by purchasing an additional Printer License. A Printer License allows you to attach additional printers to a new or existing application license. There is no limit on the number of additional printers you can attach to an application license. Additional printer licenses require adding an additional support license when first purchased.
Available on: BarTender Professional, Automation, and Enterprise editions,
A Note on Support and Maintenance: Almost all Bartender Licenses we offer come with Bartender’s standard maintenance and support for the duration of the original software license (usually 1, 3, or 5 years). Monthly Workstation and Application licenses include this support as part of the monthly fee. This support license gives you access to Bartender’s support team and free software upgrades. This support also makes it easier to transition your licenses between different computers. Bartender also offers a premium support tier that includes 24/7 support. A complete list of features can be found in the table below.
If you’re using a perpetual Workstation license or looking to renew an Application license, we highly recommend that you also renew your support and maintenance license to ensure you have access to all the benefits it provides. If you don’t have an up-to-date support license and want to upgrade your software to a new version of Bartender, you must pay a discounted pro-rated monthly charge for the lapsed time plus a license activation charge. This pro-rated charge also applies if you want to renew your support after letting it lapse. There is a 90-day grace period after your support expires, where you can renew without this penalty.
