FAQ #2438
Question
Charging your Socket Mobile Scanner
Answer
Battery FAQ (S720, D720, D800)
Minimum first charge time (important)
If the scanner is new or has been sitting, fully charge it before first use. Many “won’t power on / dies quickly” first-day issues are caused by an incomplete initial charge.
- S720: ~6 hours
- D720: 6 hours
- D800: 8 hours
Battery type and options
- S720: Rechargeable NiMH AA batteries (replaceable). Not lithium.
- D720: Rechargeable Lithium-ion polymer battery pack (replaceable).
- D800: Rechargeable Lithium-ion polymer battery pack (replaceable).
Can I use one-time (disposable) batteries?
- S720: Uses AA form factor batteries, but it is specified for rechargeable NiMH. For best performance (and to match published battery life), use the recommended rechargeable NiMH set.
- D720 / D800: No. These use proprietary rechargeable battery packs, not disposable cells.
Average battery lifespan (typical use)
Batteries are rated for ~500 charge–discharge cycles. As a practical planning estimate:
- ~1 full charge per day: about 16–17 months
- ~2 full charges per day: about 8–9 months
Note: This is the battery lifespan (capacity typically declines gradually). These models use replaceable batteries, so reduced runtime usually means “swap the battery,” not “replace the scanner.”
