Technical Specs Overview - A Look Under the Hood
Under the hood, the MC9400 is equipped with a Qualcomm 4490 2.4GHz Octa-core processor and 6GB of RAM. When compared to the MC9300’s Qualcomm 660 octa-core processor, the MC9400 delivers approximately 2.5 times more processing power and 50 percent more RAM. This new processor is also notable because it supports 5G—a first for Zebra ultra rugged devices— and WiFi 6E, which offers 4x the bandwidth and 75 percent lower latency than Wi-Fi 5. And with support for two SIM card options — nano SIM and eSim — the MC9400 can support private and public 5G connections simultaneously for network redundancy or deploy different wireless networks in different areas of the business.
Moreover, the MC9400 supports and 128GB of flash storage with expandable storage of up to 2TB, providing ample space for storing large datasets and applications. The expandable storage capacity sets a new benchmark for the industry. The MC3300 maxed out at 258 GB on a Micro SD card and during competitor research, the next closest unit we could find made by a major industry player on the market topped out at 512GB.
Its future-proof design is further reinforced by shipping with Android 13, with a commitment from Zebra to support updates up to Android 17, ensuring longevity and compatibility with evolving software requirements.
Finally, to wrap up the internal specs, the MC9400 offers camera-enabled SKUs with a 16MP Rear-Facing Camera and an 8MP front-facing Camera. The camera also has a high dynamic range, providing better detail in very light and dark areas of the photo. The camera on this is actually pretty decent even for some consumer phone devices. When benchmarked against the TC22, a comparable competitor product, and a Google Pixel 5A, the camera can hold it’s own. We’ve gotten feedback that some users have run into issues with some rugged computers featuring sub-par cameras, so a good camera can’t always be taken for granted.
All these features together make for a device equipped to handle just about any application you throw at it—regardless of how many are running at once.
Battery Performance & Accessory Support
Powering the MC9400 is a hot-swappable 7000mAh battery, providing long-lasting performance without the need to power down the device for a battery replacement. As with most Zebra devices, the batteries are rated for a complete 8-hour shift.
For operations requiring non-incendive devices, Zebra offers a Class 1 Div 2 non-incendive model that enables mobile computing in areas where hazardous materials are present — such as flammable gases and materials.
Additionally, Zebra offers an optional BLE-enabled battery that when coupled with their Zebra Device Tracker software (a separate license fee applies), enabling users to locate lost or misplaced devices within the four walls or in the field using GPS—a valuable feature for asset management in large-scale operations.
As with most Zebra devices, you’ll have your pick of charging accessories. Zebra offers multi-slot device and battery charging docks and toaster-styled battery chargers. Of note, the MC9400 is backward compatible with all MC9300 accessories. This includes charging docks, holsters, and vehicle mounts. The only new SKU added for the MC9400 line are batteries. That’s a massive plus for operators considering a fleet upgrade but don’t want to drop a fortune on new accessories. The keypads are also the same so employees who are used to a particular layout won’t be slowed down by the change.
Exterior & Durability
The MC9400 features a 4.3" display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass with an air gap (standard model) or optically bonded (freezer model), ensuring impact resistance and durability. The freezer model of the MC9400/MC9450 includes a heated touch panel and scanner exit window to ensure clear visibility even under heavy condensing conditions.
The device’s IP68 sealing is 100 percent dustproof and capable of withstanding powerful water jets, as well as being fully submerged in water up to 1 meter. Drop spec-wise, the MC9400 is rated for 6,000 3.3 ft./1.0 m tumbles to concrete—the same as the MC9300. But the MC9400 is also rated for 12 feet. drops to concrete, while the MC9300 was only 10 feet. The freezer version of the device is rated for 7 feet drops (2.1 m) to concrete (-30°C to 50°C) exceeding MIL-STD810H.
Scan Performance
One of the most critical aspects of a mobile computer in industrial settings is its scanning performance. The MC9400 delivers with an upgraded far-range scan engine, offering a longer read range and improved accuracy compared to the MC9300.
The base model will still feature the SE4770 Standard Range 2D scan engine, the same as the MC9300, but Zebra has also produced models with their SE58 imager. This new long-range scan engine has about a 20% longer read range than the extended-range imager on the MC9300 and can capture 100 mil Code 39 barcodes over 105 feet away and 55 mil QR codes out to about 24 ft.
The SE58 also features a visible green laser aimer with a wide pattern that is up to 7x more visible than a red aimer and offers up to 10ft./3 m of visibility in direct sunlight.
