Bluetooth has become a very popular option when it comes to connecting a receipt printer to a PC, tablet, or smart-phone.  It is especially useful when connecting to a device that does not have a full sized USB port such as an iPad.

There are two different types of Bluetooth printers available:  Fully mobile receipt printers that have a battery and plugin versions that need a wall outlet. Most Bluetooth receipt printers use thermal printing allowing them to print fast and quietly and they only require Thermal Paper, you do not need any kind of ribbon.

Fully mobile receipt printers are very useful for on the go receipt printing applications such as deliveries, conventions, or craft fairs.  These mobile printers generally use receipt paper that is 2 inches wide with a smaller core.   Check the printer accessories for compatible thermal receipt paper.

A plug-in Bluetooth receipt printer is great for when you have a more traditional point of sale setup but don't have an available USB port.  In these cases you can pair the printer with your tablet or PC and keep it plugged into the wall.  It'll function like a standard receipt printer, communicating via Bluetooth.

Bluetooth printers have an emulation type like most desktop printers, so the receipt format and capabilities of the printer are tied to that emulation.  The most popular emulations are Epson emulation and Star Emulation.

Compatibility with applications and programs are dependent on the software and application developer.  Typically, with windows programs, if you can specify a windows printer and the software uses the matching emulation, then a Bluetooth receipt printer will work just as well as a USB printer.  For iOS and Android applications, it is a bit more complex and you will need to check with your app developer to determine app compatibility.  In many apps rather than selecting an installed printer it will be looking for a specific Bluetooth device, if your printer is not that exact match then it will not recognize the printer as being available for that software.
