FAQ# 1048:

How do I test a cash drawer with my Epson or Epson-compatible (e.g. POS-X, Citizen) printer?

Question

How do I test a cash drawer with my Epson or Epson-compatible (e.g. POS-X, Citizen) printer?

Answer

WITHOUT EPSON-COMPATIBLE PRINTER DRIVER

  1. Create a new printer using the Generic/Text Only driver. (Installation instructions.)
  2. Verify that a Windows test page will print. (Instructions.) If a Windows test page will not print, the printer requires troubleshooting first.
  3. Right-click the Generic/Text Only printer in the Printers and Faxes window, then click the Print Commands tab. Type <1B>p055 in the End Print Job field.
  4. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, then click Notepad. Type test. Click File and then click Print. Assure that Generic/Text Only is selected in the list of printers, then click Print.
  5. Your cash drawer should now open, assuming it is correctly connected and functional. If you hear a clicking noise, but the drawer does not open, be certain the drawer is unlocked.

WITH EPSON-COMPATIBLE PRINTER DRIVER

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, then click Wordpad.
  2. Select Print from the File menu. From the printer list, click on your Epson printer. Click Apply then click Cancel.
  3. From the font drop-down menu (found at the top left-hand of the screen; most likely, this menu currently has Arial selected), select control.
  4. Click on the document to place the cursor within the typing area. Type A.
  5. Click File, then click Print. Make sure that your Epson printer is still selected.
  6. Your cash drawer should now open, assuming it is correctly connected and functional. If you hear a clicking noise, but the drawer does not open, be certain the drawer is unlocked.

INSTALLING A GENERIC/TEXT ONLY DRIVER:

  1. Click Start, then select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Printers and Faxes in Windows XP, Printers in Windows Vista, or Devices and Printers in Windows 7.
  3. Select Add Printer.
  4. Click Next. Select Local printer attached to this computer and click to uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.
  5. If you are using a parallel printer, select LPT1 from the Use the following port menu. If you are using a serial printer, select COM1 (or the correct COM port for your printer if COM1 is incorrect). If you are using a USB printer, select the highest-numbered USB port (for instance, if USB001, USB002, and USB003 are available, select USB003). Click Next. Select Generic under Manfacturer. Select Generic / Text Only under Printers. Click Next.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Yes under Do you want to print a test page? Click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
