Honeywell Scanner Guide - What's the Difference Between the Honeywell HF680, Genesis XP 7680g, and Orbit 7190G?

Customers call us all the time asking for the difference between Honeywell's different presentation scanners. From the outside, their line of presentation scanners might seem like a bunch of alphanumerical soup, but each scanner serves a slightly different purpose. Knowing that difference will ensure you get the right scanner for the job. We've broken down the five main scanners below along with what makes them unique from each other.

[<h3> HF680 </h3>][2] The HF680 is Honeywell's all-around best-value scanner for most retail applications. It looks very similar to the Orbit, and performs very similarly, too. There are two key differences. First, the HF680's area imager can't be converted to a laser scanner the same way the Orbit can. We go into more details on why that's important later. The other key difference is that the HF680 has slightly more range when scanning just about any barcode. Not a large difference - mind you - but the fact that the HF680 is cheaper than the Orbit makes it the ideal buy if you're not looking for a laser scanner.

[<h3> Genesis XP7680G </h3>][4] Are you looking for a presentation scanner with flexible mounting options? This is the option for you. The unit is perfect for light-duty industrial applications where a fixed scanner is needed at an affordable price. A non-mountable version is available as well, though if this is needed, the HF680 might be a better choice overall.

[<h3> Orbit 7190G </h3>][6]As noted before, the big feature on the Orbit 7190G is the ability to convert the scanner into a laser scanner. A laser allows for precision scanning well beyond what a linear imager can provide. This is ideal for situations where you'll be scanning things with multiple barcodes next to each other and need to have better control of where the scanner is pointing.

[<h3> Vuquest 3220G </h3>][8]The Vuquest was built for discrete mounting and scanning options. Its small footprint and scanner position makes it great for under-counter mounting solutions in medium-volume retail or low-volume industrial settings. Overall, the unit performs a similar function as the XP7680g, but at a small footprint and for a slightly different use case.

[<h3> Solaris 7980g </h3>][10] The final item on this list is the Solaris. This recently-revived scanner is ideal for grocery stores and retail settings where heavy-volume scanning is required. That high-performance scanning comes with a premium price almost double the cost of something like the HF680 or the Orbit. If you're not going to be scanning things at the volume of a grocery store, the Orbit or HF680 might be the way to go.
