Why POS Software?

POS Software is not a new thing it's been around since <a href = "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM">dos based IBM machines</a> started being used in businesses all over the US.  Originally POS Software was keystroke based and heavily relied upon the f-keys.  Over time with the advent of the GUI OS, lower cost PC's, and demand for more information about your business POS Software grew to be a necessity for a well run business.

Do you see businesses using a 10 key register?  Yeah, they are still around, and depending on the cashier's skill with a 10 key, some cashiers can be remarkably fast.  However with a 10 key register you loose some critical abilities that really are a must these days.  For one automatic reordering and inventory control can be a huge time saver, instead of counting shelves every night, or having the cashier mentally track what was sold that day, an inventory report can show you exactly what was sold, what is low, and even produce a report that you can fax/email/call in to your vendors or distributors.  Think about your labor cost to do a daily inventory check and then balance that against the <a href = "http://posguys.com/point-of-sale-software_35/">cost of POS Software</a>, in most cases the cost of the software is off set within a month or two.

Secondly there is the security factor.  Businesses are always having to deal with merchandise being stolen, and having your inventory levels readily available shows quickly if something is missing that shouldn't be.  Additionally there is the business owners worse fear, but the thief being assisted by a rogue employee.  With POS software, you set up cashier and manager permissions that restrict certain features to only be available to managers and administrators such as price changes, returns, or discounting.  That way a rogue employee can't just give their friends a big discount without first getting manager approval.  You can also track what is sold by each cashier, so it is easier to notice odd sales data (like cigarettes being sold 5x more when an employee works that is known not to check  IDs)

Why <a href = "http://posguys.com/buyersguide/Buyers_Guide_POS_Software.asp">POS Software</a>?  is a really complex question but based on inventory and cashier features alone a business can really see a big savings in the long run.
