Star Micronics TSP100IV Review

The [Star Micronics TSP100IV][1] is the newest model in Star’s flagship line printers and they’ve made a few upgrades and additions to the printer to make it ready-to-use in today’s cloud-based and tablet-dominated industry.

<h3>New Connection Methods & Ports</h3>
When compared to the TSP100III, the two units look very different. The TSP100IV features an updated and modern design that is about 20% smaller than the TSP100III. That modern update doesn’t limit itself to just the exterior, because Star really made a big change by swapping out the old USB-B printer port that’s been a staple of receipt printers for years and replacing it with a USB-C port. Despite the port change, the TSP100IV is a drop-in replacement for the TSP100III - so you won’t need to worry about spending a lot of time getting this printer up and running in an existing setup. The most you’ll need to do is update the driver, which is a simple process. In addition to that USB port, Another big change is the decision to ship all units with an Ethernet port. This is a big improvement over the TSP100III - where you could only have one or another.

For people using this printer with a tablet, there’s some more good news. All TSP100IV’s ship with a USB-A port on the back. Using that port, the printer can charge and communicate with any Android mobile device that’s compatible with Android Open Accessory support. What’s cool about this addition is that you can use that USB port to directly connect scanners and other devices directly into the printer and have it act as a central hub for most of your setup. The downside is that your POS Software has to be specifically coded to support those accessories so it’s not something you can do with every setup so it's best to check with your software vendor before purchasing. This note is especially important for iOS users.

Finally, all units also come loaded with Cloud Print support which some POS software and online ordering platforms use. This service allows web apps to easily send print jobs over the internet. Star has a few other printers with this already but this is the first one on the TSP100 line. Between all of these different connection types, you’ll have a lot of flexibility when integrating this printer. 
<h3>Specification Breakdown</h3>
Looking under the hood, under the hood, you'll find that the TSP100IV has pretty identical specs to the TSP100III all the way through. Both feature a 10” per second print speed and can use 2 and 3” receipt paper. Furthermore, both are rated to print about 60 million lines before failure - that equals about 110 miles or about 2640 rolls of standard-sized receipt paper. And just in case, the unit ships with a 4-year manufacturer warranty so if anything does go wrong, Star will help you get it repaired.
