A newer processor lets the ZD421 run more tasks and operations at the same time. Five LED status icons show when media needs replenishment or an issue needs attention, while the three-button interface provides more control than the single-button, single-light design common on basic desktop printers.

Factory- or field-installable communications and media-handling modules allow the printer to evolve after deployment. A cutter or dispenser/peeler can be added without replacing the printer, and wireless or wired network interfaces can be installed as requirements change.

The ZD421 is available in 203 dpi and 300 dpi, with media widths that vary between direct thermal, roll-ribbon and cartridge models.

Groundbreaking Cartridge for Instant Ribbon Changes

The ZD421C uses a one-way ribbon cartridge that loads in seconds, removing the need to thread a ribbon roll. A smart chip reports when the ribbon needs replacement; this cartridge capability applies only to the ZD421C, while standard thermal transfer models use 74-meter or 300-meter rolls.

ZPL II and EPL 2 support allows established label formats and applications to continue in service. Zebra Printer Emulations can interpret selected languages normally associated with other brands, which simplifies replacement in mixed printer fleets.

USB 2.0 and USB Host are standard. Optional 10/100 Ethernet, RS-232 serial, Wi-Fi 6/Bluetooth 5.3 or Wi-Fi 5/Bluetooth radios support wired and wireless deployments; BLE assists mobile setup, and the Print Touch NFC tag enables tap-to-pair access.

A full-width reflective sensor and multi-position transmissive sensor support gaps, black lines and notches across varied media layouts. The ZD421 handles roll-fed or fan-fold labels and tags, receipt paper and wristbands, with a 5-inch maximum roll diameter.

A Portable Solution to Print Almost Anywhere

The optional 2750 mAh battery supports cordless operation, and a carrying case can bring the printer and battery to the point of application. The carrying case does not fit when a cutter or peeler is attached, a model-specific limitation worth considering when configuring mobile workflows.

The standard package includes the printer, AC power supply, power cord, USB cable, Quick Start Guide and Regulatory Guide. Thermal transfer models include a 0.5-inch empty take-up core; roll-ribbon ZD421 configurations also include two 300-meter adapters and an additional 1-inch take-up core.

Ribbon-cartridge, healthcare, 300 dpi, wireless, Ethernet, serial, battery and media-handling capabilities depend on the configuration chosen. They are preserved here with their qualifiers and are not represented as standard on every ZD421.
