“We’ve been living in the stone age”

That was the first thing my customer said today. He runs a very popular event held annually for a non-profit organization. This event raises over a hundred thousand dollars for the organization! Every year they raffle off a car. They sell over 3000 raffle tickets and end up with a winner by process of elimination. They pull a ticket, type the number on the ticket into a program that turns around and flashes the number on a 30-foot screen. After that, another person announces the name on the losing ticket. Simple enough, right? While this process has been working for them it takes a very long time, 6-7 hours. Not only does it take a long time but the fact that they are trying to hurry the process leaves them open for errors when typing in the numbers from the tickets. So there are two problems here: their current solution takes a long time; and the ticket holders are at the mercy of the person typing in the ticket numbers. The solution here is simple. All they need is a barcode scanner. The replacement of their keyboard with a barcode scanner solves both of their issues. They will now be 100% accurate when pulling the losing tickets and can quickly scan the ticket’s barcode, speeding up the process. They could have gone with almost any barcode scanner. Since their focus was speeding up the process I suggested that they stay away from our low volume scanners. He went with the Motorola LS2208.
