Cataloging a Personal Library

Often customers call in looking for an inexpensive way to catalog their personal library. They also want it to be quick and easy. “Which barcode scanner can just scan the ISBN number on the book and add it to an Excel spreadsheet?” they ask. The easy answer is “any of them” but that only transfers the ISBN number to Excel, nothing more. You then have to enter (type in) all of the information you want to be associated with the ISBN: title; author; copyright etc… The more efficient way to do this would be to purchase a simple corded scanner, like the Short Range, and sign up for a free (or close to free) web based service that creates the library for you. The advantage of signing up is that they already have a database of ALL books, maybe even DVDs and CDs that exist with their associated ISBN or UPC or SKU. So now, when you scan the ISBN number into their website it automatically brings up that specific book with title and author etc… Depending on the size of your library you can have your catalog set up in a matter of hours as opposed to days or even weeks! Tip: When looking for an application search “personal library management”.
