Stilettos to Scanners

Before selling barcode scanners, and other POS hardware and software, I sold shoes. I lived most girls’ dream, surrounded by shoes all day everyday. Prior to selling shoes I was a fashion student at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. I moved to LA in 2004 – straight out of high school. I was very committed to graduating, so much so that I started summer quarter and graduated December of 2005. It was an amazing experience. I graduated with a degree in Apparel Manufacturing Management. You may be asking, What the heck do you do with that degree? Well, very soon after graduating (only two weeks later) I started working for an apparel manufacturer. We specialized in cashmere sweaters and accessories. I was Product Development Coordinator for the company. This meant that designers would come to us with their sketched designs and I would send those off to China –with a lot of technical specifications – and a few weeks later would receive the first sample of the client’s design. I loved my job, every day was different and everything was so hands on. Eventually, I started missing home so I began planning my return. I always said I would not return unless I had my own business. I planned carefully and opened my own shoe store in March of 2008. No amount of planning could have prepared me for what happened to the US economy that year. It was a short lived dream, my business was severely affected by local construction and the economy, I was forced to close the following year in March of 2009. After closing my business I worked a couple of retail jobs before coming across this position here at POSGuys. There was an ad online looking for account managers, specifically Spanish speaking, women and minorities were encouraged to apply. That’s how I ended up here, selling barcode scanners and everything else point of sale. I had used it all before but had never really questioned how it all worked together. And so... my adventure in the point of sale world began.
