Exploring the mC-Label3: A New Industry Standard for Hybrid Receipt/Label Printers

The [mC-Label3][1] is a true multi-functional printer, setting a new standard in the market. Building upon the foundation of its predecessor, the TSP650IISK, the mC-Label3 introduces significant upgrades and special features that redefine the printing experience. In this review, we highlight some of the printer's most notable features and cover some of the technical specs and supported accessories.

Innovate Features Make for Versatile Media Support & Hybrid Printing

All versions of the mC-Label3 can print on regular receipt paper, linered or linerless sticky media, and die-cut labels. That’s an upgrade from the TSP650IISK which wasn’t really equipped for die-cut media. The reason for this improvement is the Gap and Black Mark Sensor built into the printer is the reason for that upgrade. With this, the printer is able to calibrate itself to accommodate different media lengths and will avoid cutting/partially printing a die-cut label.

Another notable feature is the inclusion of a spring-loaded adjustable media hanger which clamps down onto the media core. This provides unparalleled flexibility with label rolls when compared to other receipt printers on the market that use fixed-place plastic spacers that must be installed and re-adjusted for each type of label. These types of spacers generally restrict media to either 3.1” (80mm), 2.2” (58mm) wide or 1.5” (40mm) media. The mcLabel’s adjustability lets it get all the way down to 1”, and just about everything else in between.

The only thing that holds this printer back from being a truly stand-out label printer capable of replacing more purpose-built label printers is the lack of emulation support for ZPL. Though we are hesitant to dock the printer many points for this omission since Star Micronics wasn’t intending to build a printer capable of replacing existing label setups.

In sum: the MC-Label strikes a balance as a hybrid printer, excelling in both receipt and label printing. While it may lack support for some common label printing language emulation like ZPL, it compensates with its exceptional performance in various printing scenarios.

Print-On-Demand Button

Unique to the mC-Label3 line of printers is the inclusion of a One-Touch button located on the front of the printer. With this button, you can<p style store and allocate up to three static receipts or label images within the mC-Label3 and then quickly print them with a few button presses. Whether you need to print food safety labels, retail item details, or logos, it’s as easy as one, two, or three pushes of the printer’s multi-function button. This means streamlined operations and maximize efficiency, even in the absence of an internet connection. It’s common for manufacturers to allow you to temporarily load image files into a receipt or label printer’s memory, but there is very rarely a way to easily recall those images without software integration. This printer bridges that gap.

Print Performance & Part Number Breakdown
When it comes to speed, the mC-Label3 can print up to 7 inches/second for both labels and receipts. While comparable to the TSP650IISK and slightly slower than the TSP100IV, Star’s most current generation printer, the mC-Label3 narrowly passes other hybrid printers in the market.

There are four models of the printer and the only difference between different models comes down to interface options.

Accessories

Regardless of which part number is used, all models feature Star's USB Hub, facilitating communication and device charging directly through the USB-C/USB-A connection on the back.

With these and other ports on the printer, you’re able to extend the printer’s functionality with Star's range of accessories. From customer-facing 2-line displays to separate Wireless LAN Units and distinct alarm buzzers for print job notifications, the MC-Label offers accessories that help the printer fit into whatever use case you’re using.

You can also plug in a Star-branded barcode scanner and have the data routed directly through the printer to the device but your software needs to support that functionality. It won’t automatically input it as a keyboard, which you might expect.

Easy Part Replacement

As with any sticky media printer, the MC-Label may encounter issues with the autocutter and rubber roller over time. That is a common issue that impacts just about every hybrid linerless printer on the market The additional adhesives and plastic-based liners are extra tough on internal components and cause them to degrade at quicker rates than normal printers. Star Micronics has addressed this concern by designing the MC-Label for easy field replacement of the cutter and platen roller. This feature ensures minimal downtime and straightforward maintenance, enhancing the overall reliability of the printer.

Software Compatibility
As of the time of writing (Dec. 2024), no major POS software has integrated the mcLabel3. The printer does, however, support Star’s CloudPRNT, so if you’re running software that is using CloudPRNT-enabled software you may be able to drop this printer into your existing setup.

If you’re running a Windows-based POS setup and are using a printer with USB or Ethernet, you may be able to drop this printer into your existing setup with little additional setup required. You won’t be able to take advantage of all the features the printer offers, but if you need quick label printing with only a few templates, this might be a viable option.
