EMV Guide - Updating Aldelo Restaurant Software

<p>EMV is a change in the liability policies of popular credit companies Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV). This payment standard change is meant to make credit transactions more secure in the United States, most other countries have already adopted EMV's chip card technology. The EMV liability change is not a law, and you will not be fined for failing to comply. </p>

<h2>Why should I add an EMV enabled chip card reader to Aldelo?</h2>

<p>If your customers use a chip card and you do not process the sale with an EMV chip card reader then you could be liable for fraudulent or stolen card transaction chargebacks. Before October 1st, 2015 the credit card company would be liable. On October 1st, the liability shifts to the least secure part of the payment chain which in this case would be the merchant who did not process a chip card with a chip reader. You do not legally need to use a chip reader to process credit and debit cards but it will help protect your business from paying for those specific kinds of chargebacks.</p>

<h2>How do I add EMV Capability to my POS system running on Aldelo restaurant software?</h2>

<p>There are two ways to upgrade your POS System running on Aldelo or Aldelo Lite to the latest chip reading technology. (POSGuys Restaurant POS Systems run on Aldelo) The first option is to use Aldelo's built in EMV functionality. If you change payment processors during this process you will be required to purchase a new Aldelo EDC license. The second option is to use an independent payment terminal.</p>

Payment will not be accepted through your software. Instead upon selecting pay with card the software will direct the cashier to process the payment and then they tell it when the payment is finalized. It  records the sale as usual but the chip payment will process independent of the software.

<td><p><b>Pros:</b> Upgrading your system with this method eliminates manually entering the transaction into a payment terminal.

  <b>Cons:</b> If you are not with Sterling Payment Processing you must switch over and pay the Aldelo EDC charge a second time. If your software is not at the latest version of Aldelo you must upgrade. If your POS Computer uses an Atom processor you will need a new computer for it to be compatible with the latest version of Aldelo. </p>

<td><p><b>Pros:</b> The fastest route to processing chip cards while using Aldelo software.

  <b>Cons:</b> The payment amount must be entered manually into the payment terminal rather then being automatically filled by the Aldelo software. For discounted hardware you will have to change your payment processing company and sign up for a three year contract. Terminals can be paid for in full but they still have to be activated with a key. </p>

<h2>What if I cannot install a chip reader before October 1st?</h2>

<p>Many of the payment terminals that accept chip cards are back ordered out until January 2016 but you will not be fined for failing to meet the October 1st  deadline. It is  not a law. Your primary risk is  that a criminal may bring a stolen chip card into the store and if you process it with a magnetic stripe reader then you will be liable to pay for the transaction if there is a chargeback. </p>
<p>An easy and affordable thing you can do to help protect your business if you are in the process of switching or if you have decided to wait before switching is to post a sign. "100% ID Check. Why the change? Due to new regulations we now check ID on all card transactions. Thank you for your understanding." Additionally you should  compare signature on receipt to signature on card as well as ensure that the last four digits on the receipt match the last four digits on the card. Scammers will sometimes encode one of their own credit cards with the data from a different card to prevent ID checks from being a problem.</p>
