System Requirements for Point of Sale Computers

Shopping for a new computer terminal? Most manufacturers of point of sale computers, specifically all-in-one touch screen computers, will have many different configurations available from which to choose. These configurations or options will include how much memory (RAM), the size of the hard drive and type (HDD or SSD), the available processor and operating system. Other options may include an integrated magnetic stripe reader (MSR) and rear customer display.

So how do you know what to choose? Here are some guidelines that I believe will help narrow down the options.
Operating System:

Windows XP, Windows POSReady 2009, Windows 7 Pro, Windows POSReady 7

These are the most common you will see listed. However, Windows XP is no longer available to choose from since Microsoft is no longer supporting this operating system with new security updates, and this includes POSReady 2009.

The standard is Windows 7 Pro and Windows POSReady 7. What is POSReady 7? Windows Embedded POSReady 7 is an operating system optimized for POS, it allows retailers to have features made for point of sale. For example, this allows administrators to specify exactly what is allowed to run on the POS device, so an employee is less likely to open up an unauthorized program. It is a bit more simplified than Windows 7 Pro, offering the same experience with minimal distractions.

If your business is only running one point of sale program and doesn't require advanced network features, windows POSReady 7 works best.
Processor:

Atom, Celeron, Pentium, i3, i5, i7

The processor type often times depends on the software application that you are using. I would suggest checking with the software developer for a system requirement list. If you are using a web based application, then an Atom or Celeron processor will suffice - the Atom processor often being more cost effective. For a large database and applications requiring more processing speed, it is a good idea to go up to a Pentium or i3 processor.
Memory:

1GB RAM, 2GB RAM, 4GB RAM, 8GB RAM

Typically the more RAM, the better. 2GB is generally the minimum suggested, rarely is 1GB seen. 8GB of RAM is usually not seen on point of sale computers, however memory can always be upgraded in the future. I suggest sticking with 2GB or 4GB.
Storage:

32GB SSD, 60GB SSD, 120GB SSD, 120GB HDD, 250GB HDD, 500GB HD

An SSD (Solid State Drive) option provides fast boot-up and generally lasts longer than a traditional hard drive. The SSD has no moving parts, making it shock resistant and less likely to fail. I would suggest the 60GB SSD unless you need lots of storage or to keep costs down then a 250GB hard drive would suffice.

For workstations on multi-station set ups that draw information from a server or main station, the lowest amount of hard drive space is sufficient.
Peripheral Devices:

Integrated MSR, Rear Customer Display, Integrated Finger Print Reader, etc.

These optional accessories are good ways to add functionality to the terminal itself, without having to purchase external devices. Checking with your software developer first is suggested to see if these devices are supported.

To conclude, there are many different options when looking for a point of sale computer. Often times, higher specifications make your terminal perform better and work with your applications more seamlessly. However, when working on a budget, it is a good idea to check with your software developer for their minimum system requirements.
