How to connect a Barcode Scanner
Barcode scanners can be connected to a PC, MAC, or Tablet through a variety of wired and wireless interfaces. The most common for PC is USB, the most common for tablets is bluetooth.
USB barcode scanners plug into a computer using the standard female USB port. Most versions of Windows from Windows 2000 on up install the necessary HID driver automatically, removing the need to download a device specific driver. The driver will normally be a HID (Human interface device) with the manufacturer's name sometimes specified with it example: Zebra H...

CRE Database Backup
In our last post we talked about backing up the restaurant software, Aldelo, to have some kind of disaster recovery. Cash Register Express, a more general point of sale software, also has a backup utility built in.
Below is our guide, including pictures, to walk through the process step-by-step.
NOTE: Database Backup cannot be completed until all credit card transactions have been settled.
Open Cash Register Express, but don't log in. Click on File at the top left portion of the screen.
Select Database Maintenance and then Backup Database
Any loss of data, whether it's a personal computer, handheld device, or business computer brings a lot of stress. Loss of data on a POS system means losing customer transactions, menu settings, inventory, and more.
Luckily, the backup process for Aldelo is simple.
Open the Aldelo software. On the opening screen, select Back Office
On the Back Office screen, select Backup Database
Select a drive and a location from the menu. We recommend keeping a copy on the computer and on an external drive. A USB thumb drive works well and can be placed in a safe location easily.
Last week I was out travelling for business. The process of travelling is always grueling, but technology promises to make things more efficient.
A lot of companies are starting to release coupons, accept payment, and check-in via smartphones. It looks simple: you get an email with a square barcode (called a 2D barcode), load the image onto your phone, and scan it at the register.
Most of the time, this process works well. However, like happened on my trip, the scanner doesn't scan properly and everyone else is left waiting longer until the user can sort it out. Why does this happen? There ...
Later this year, Microsoft will change the Windows 10 upgrade option to a Recommended update. They're doing this as a method to get everyone who qualifies onto one operating system. This means, if your update settings are set to install recommended updates (which is the default setting for Windows 7 Service Pack 2, Windows 8, and 8.1), Windows 10 will get installed automatically.
For Microsoft, this ensures that there is only one operating system to support, one set of features to develop, and one track of bugs and errors to fix.
For Microsoft, this is a huge change that will help their busi...
How far can you extend a USB Barcode Scanner?
TLDR: about 30 feet
If your cable for your barcode scanner isn't quite long enough you can use a male to female extension cable to get a bit more length out of the cable. These cables come in different lengths from a couple of feet to ten feet or more. Keep in mind though that the cable can only go so long before there is not enough current to power the cable and/or the scanner can no longer communicate with the computer.
In our testing we were able to go out around 28 feet for a presentation DS4800 Barcode Scanner and 31 feet for a trigg...
A big question on many minds these days is whether or not to take advantage of Microsoft's offer of a free Windows 10 Upgrade. It looks like a great deal; and it is advertised to be faster, more secure, and have a better user experience.
So the question is... should you upgrade?
The answer is not a simple "yes" or "no", depending on your circumstances.
Let's take a look at some of the features of Windows 10 that will impact the Point-of-Sale world.
Windows 10, at this point in time, is free to upgrade from previous versions. However, that free offer will only l...
